Lung cancer is the most lethal form of cancer globally, with five-year survival following diagnosis varying between 5% to 25%. Around 20% of lung cancer patients are “non-smokers,” indicating that there are other risk factors and determinants besides tobacco smoking that might contribute to the development of this disease.
LUCIA is an interdisciplinary project that intends to create a repository of lung cancer patient data (digital biobank) based on retrospective and prospective cohort data, as well as a complete toolkit for the investigation of lung cancer risk factors and health determinants. The objective of the research is to enhance the screening, early identification, and management of lung cancer through an in-depth examination of three aspects: i) personal risk factors, which include a person’s exposure to chemical pollutants and behavioral and lifestyle factors; ii) external risk factors, such as urban, built and transport environments, social aspects and climate; and iii) biological responses to the personal and external risk factors, including changes in genetics, epigenetics, metabolism and aging. It will attempt to uncover all risk factors and create innovative approaches for the disease’s diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. The resulting evidence of the project will be translated into policymaking recommendations, with the aim to implement them in a screening program for LC.
LUCIA is part of the Cancer Mission cluster of projects on “Understanding”. The consortium is led by Technion – Israel Institute of Technology and Prof. Hossam Haick, a worldwide expert in the field of nanotechnology and non-invasive disease diagnosis.
